A cheaper alternative to Profound for AI visibility

Profound sits at the enterprise end of AI-visibility tracking - its starter tier monitors ChatGPT only and there’s no self-serve trial, with fuller engine coverage arriving in plans several times the entry price. If that’s more than your team needs, a cheaper alternative just has to keep the essentials: multiple engines with no per-engine upcharge, mentions tracked separately from citations, share of voice against competitors, and a trend over time. CiteLyzer, the tool I build, was designed as exactly that lean alternative - and below is an honest checklist for judging it or any other candidate.

Disclosure first: I’m the founder of CiteLyzer, another tool in this category, so read the recommendation part accordingly. The checklist itself is vendor-neutral - it’s the same set of questions I’d ask before buying any tracker, including mine. Prices and packaging change often; the Profound figures here were checked in July 2026, so verify against the live pricing page before deciding.

What are you actually paying for in Profound?

Profound’s pitch is enterprise-grade: broad monitoring, agency-style workflows, integrations and a sales-led onboarding. As of July 2026 its starter tier was around $99/month covering ChatGPT only, with Perplexity and AI Overviews arriving in a growth tier at roughly $399/month - and access starts with a demo call rather than a self-serve trial.

None of that is a flaw if you’re a large organisation that wants procurement, SSO and a vendor team. It is simply more machinery than a small business, a solo marketer or most agencies need to answer the core question: do AI engines mention and cite my brand, and is that number moving?

What a cheaper alternative must keep (checklist)

  • All the engines your buyers use, in the base price - ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode - not one engine with the rest sold as upgrades.
  • Mentions and citations as separate metrics, so you know whether to fix content or brand presence.
  • Share of voice against a competitor set you define - a solo number tells you nothing about whether you’re winning the shortlist.
  • A trend over time with scheduled re-runs; one-off checks can’t distinguish signal from the natural volatility of AI answers.
  • Your market’s language and country editions - answers differ by locale, and English-only measurement misses non-English buyers entirely.
  • A low-commitment start: monthly billing, a small plan or a one-off report, so a mistake costs a month, not a year.

What you can safely give up

Cheaper tools stay cheap by skipping the enterprise layer, and for most teams that layer is genuinely optional: SSO and procurement workflows, dozens of integrations, seats for large teams, consultant services, custom contracts. Losing those doesn’t change the measurement itself.

What you should not give up is measurement quality: engine coverage, language handling and the mention/citation split. A tool that’s cheap because it measures less isn’t an alternative - it’s a different, smaller answer.

Where CiteLyzer fits

CiteLyzer was built as the lean end of this market: all five engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode) in every plan with no per-engine upcharges, mentions and citations tracked separately, share of voice against your competitors, and language-aware measurement including inflected brand names - it was built Polish-first, where brand names decline through seven grammatical cases, and that rigor carries over to other markets.

What it doesn’t have is the enterprise packaging: no SSO, no integration marketplace, no consulting arm. If you need those, Profound and similar platforms earn their price. If you need the measurement itself with a small-business bill, that gap is the point.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cheaper alternative to Profound for AI visibility?

Any tracker that keeps the core measurement - multi-engine coverage in the base price, mentions separate from citations, share of voice and a trend over time - while dropping the enterprise layer (SSO, integrations, sales-led onboarding). CiteLyzer is built as exactly that lean alternative; verify current pricing on both sides before choosing.

What do cheap AI visibility tools usually sacrifice?

The good ones sacrifice enterprise packaging: seats, SSO, integrations and services. The bad ones sacrifice measurement - fewer engines, English-only prompts, blended metrics. Check which kind of “cheaper” you’re looking at before you buy.

Is a one-off report enough instead of a subscription?

It’s the right start if you mainly want to know where you stand today: one measurement with a diagnosis and recommendations. A subscription earns its keep once you’re shipping changes and need to see whether the trend responds.

Do I need enterprise features to track AI visibility properly?

No. Proper tracking is about engine coverage, language handling, separate mention/citation metrics and scheduled re-runs. Enterprise features affect how the tool fits a large organisation, not whether the numbers are right.
